About the Department: The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery was formally established in 1971 under the direction of Dr. Harvey Bender. In 2004 the department was split to form the Department of Cardiac Surgery and the Department of Thoracic Surgery to heighten education and the need for specialized care to our patients. Dr. Bill Putnam was the first Chairman and under his leadership our department has grown and thrived into the nationally recognized group that currently exists. Driven to advance the comprehensive practice of thoracic surgery through research and by employing new and advanced technologies and treatment options, we provide a rich educational environment for our residents and outstanding outcomes for our patients JOB SUMMARY: The research assistant will be responsible for assisting in experimental studies and for organizational and administrative support of multiple research programs in the Bacchetta Lab. Our laboratory develops artificial organs and mechanical support technologies for application in regenerative medicine, study of disease and fundamental biological research. Most of the work is done in vivo, in large animal models, and some is done in vitro, in bioreactors and biomaterial scaffolds. The use of mathematical models, image processing techniques and data processing are standard components of our research. Under moderate supervision, set up, conduct experiments, and continue research projects following protocols including the appropriate recording of data and reporting of standard or variant results. Assist in other laboratory and research functions. L aboratory duties (20%), Assistance in laboratory experiments (including animal work) (50%), Preparation and coordination of meeting and seminars (10%), Ordering of supplies, generating and maintaining records (20%) KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
