Recreation Therapist SandyPines is a 149 bed Residential Psychiatric Facility servicing children and adolescents ages 5 to 17. The facility is located in beautiful sub-tropical South Florida and is nestled beside Jonathan Dickinson State Park which creates a rustic, roomy outdoor atmosphere. SandyPines is at the county line of both Palm Beach and Martin Counties and is just minutes away from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The Recreation Therapist provides Therapeutic Recreation services to residents as part of the treatment team to meet their specific physical and psychological needs in accordance with SandyPines' policies and procedures. Essential Functions Instructs patients in activities and techniques designed to their specific physical or psychological needs Assist the treatment team in developing a treatment plan with varied interventions based on assessment, interests and objectives of therapy. Encourages residents to acquire new skills and promote leisure activities. Responsible for creating and maintain unit schedules, which include all programming. Distributes the schedules to the social services department, charge nurses, CNO and CEO. Assists in advance planning of artistic, expressive and creative therapeutic, safe, age and developmentally appropriate group activities for the residents on each unit and reviews those plans with the Director of Youth Development. Facilitates artistic, expressive and/or creative therapy groups, as planned above, 1x weekly for all residents as assigned by the Master group schedule and as prescribed according to the resident's treatment plan. Ensures content of group activities is not repetitive. Content of group activities reflects thoughtful planning, and utilizes creative and imaginative ideas that tie into the residents' treatment plan goals/objectives. Continually researches available resources on creative expressive therapies and utilizes multiple resources - i.e. books, internet suggestions, instruments, workbooks, play therapy materials, etc. to plan and facilitate unique and creative topics for groups. Residents' artwork resulting from participation in creative and expressive therapy groups is displayed throughout the hospital in an artistic and creative manner; Displayed artwork is routinely changed approximately 1x every 2 months. Generates enthusiasm and excitement when facilitating creative and expressive therapy groups with the residents as evidenced by direct observation, self/staff report. Documents group interventions accurately and in a timely fashion ensuring individualized treatment plan problems are stated and addressed and the content of the activity/note is relevant to individualized treatment issues. Prepare and submit progress notes and ensure the notes are neat, legible and contain signature, as well as date and time of signature. When a child is unable to attend group, documents acceptable rationale for the missed group. When necessary (i.e. absences, illnesses, vacations of the secondary creative/activity therapist) assists with the planning and overall facilitation of therapeutic, safe, age and developmentally appropriate outings. Maintains records of planned outings. This includes financial planning, meal planning, punctuality of starting outings, etc. When planning outings in the absence of the secondary creative/activity therapist, outing destinations are not repetitive. When covering outings in the absence of the activity therapist, generates enthusiasm and excitement regarding all therapeutic outings with both residents and staff. Certified in R.O.P.E.S. and facilitates groups according to certification guidelines. Provides support to other certified staff.If not scheduled to conduct groups, can and does fill in for absent facilitators when and if necessary and as directed by the Director. Maintains R.O.P.E.S. certification via attendance at R.O.P.E.S. supervision a minimum of 6 hours every other month and 1x annual certification class. Facilitates the WORK-IT program according to policy and procedure for all female residents. Shares responsibility for the oversight and facilitation of the pet therapy program. Shares responsibility for the maintenance/updating of the creative therapy bulletin board located in the cafeteria, which is updated at least 1x every other month. Shares responsibility in the planning and coordination of all special events and activities for holidays. Reviews those plans in advance with the Director during supervision. Ensures check requests are made in a timely manner with submission of receipts and balances of unused funds submitted to Accounts Payable. Is assisted by the secondary creative/activity therapist. Shares responsibility in the planning and facilitation of the annual field day which coincides with the end of the school year.Is assisted by the secondary creative/activity therapist. Shares responsibility in the planning, coordination, and facilitation of the summer camp program. Summer camp activities are creative, safe, and age appropriate. Shares responsibility with the Secondary Creative/Activity therapist in the cleaning and organizing of the storage closet and office. Assists in coverage within the department as directed. Attends all required meetings and in-services. If not present, takes initiative in getting missed information from co-workers and/or supervisor. Demonstrates competence in the understanding of service delivery for co-occurring disorders. Demonstrates an understanding of the stages of change and the interventions to be utilized for each stage.
