The Cytotechnologist screens conventional and thin layer gynecologic cytology specimens for abnormal cells using both manual microscopy and automated imaging systems. The Cytotechnologist formulates a diagnosis and reports normal findings directly to ordering providers through the laboratory information system. The Cytotechnologist forwards all cases with abnormal findings and other pre-defined findings to the pathologist for review. The Cytotechnologist screens gynecology specimens at a rate consistent with regulatory requirements and departmental workload expectations. The Cytotechnologist forwards cases flagged for quality control rescreen to the supervisor. The cytotechnologist screens non-gynecologic cytology preparations according at a rate consistent with regulatory requirements and departmental workload expectations and formulates a diagnostic impression for pathologist consideration. He or she follows procedures set forth in the Standard Operating Procedures Manual for Cytology and perform all other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
Bachelor of Science Degree
CT (ASCP) Certified
ThinPrep Certified and CYTYC Imaging System Certified
Able to evaluate slides and determine specimen adequacy based on current adequacy guidelines established by the Bethesda System.
Able to recognize abnormal cells on the glass slide and be able to formulate a diagnosis that falls within one diagnostic category of the Bethesda System.
Basic computer skills to enter cytology interpretation codes/results.
