Responsible for assisting Information Technology staff in the installation, maintenance, implementation and continuous usage of mid-range and mainframe software and hardware platforms. Provides and promotes a technical environment which will maximize the productivity of I.T. personnel while minimizing cost and organizational impact.
Performs duties to support the goals and objectives of Geisinger Health System in its efforts to provide quality patient care and patient satisfaction.
Receives general supervision from the Systems Engineer - Team Leader and Lead, or the Director.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*1. Evaluates, recommends and implements new system software products, product updates and new releases. Maintains an inventory of products, current release level and all updates or local modifications.
*2. Informs appropriate personnel of new features, limitations, and considerations produced by upgrades or new products. Participates in the evaluation of new hardware products and upgrades.
*3. Assists Operations personnel, as required, in diagnosing hardware problems and effecting recovery/restart.
*4. Provides documentation on general system operating procedures.
*5. Establishes and maintains a technical library of resource materials. Controls the distribution of manuals and updates to ensure prudent purchasing, utilization and currency of publications. Facilitates online documentation where possible to avoid hardcopy.
*6. Provides education and counsel to users and I.T. personnel on the use and understanding of systems software.
*7. Serves as a liaison to vendor software support personnel as needed by I.T. personnel.
*8. Determines and implements programs and procedures to analyze resource utilization and support planning activities.
9. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Demonstrates knowledge of operating systems, networking, and I.S. infrastructures related to a z/OS, Open VMS, Tru64 Unix, HP-UX, AIX, Solaris or MPE/iX platform. This includes some degree of hardware and software technologies associated with one of these platforms.
Demonstrates ability to work in a team environment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Systems or equivalent experience required.
Minimum two years general Information Technology experience, with minimum one-year experience in direct support of software and hardware products, required.
