At the direction of the Director of Quality Services, the Risk Manager assesses, plans, implements, manages, and coordinates the risk management activities at all Advanced Pain Management locations, which include all clinic, ambulatory surgery center and corporate office locations. The Risk Manager is also responsible for the collection, management, analysis, monitoring and reporting of risk management information (occurrence tracking, medical/professional staff data, safety, etc.), and follow-up in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. This person would also be involved in financial risk management, management of claims and litigation against the organization, interface with legal counsel, and analysis and management of safety/environment of care issues.
Manages and resolves all pre-litigation matters, litigation, regulatory matters, grievances, complaints and other such matters which may pose risk to the organization. This includes investigation of all complaints and incidents at all locations. Travel, including overnight travel, to multiple facilities and locations, addressing routine and emergent issues, is required.
Conducts an annual Risk Assessment of each APM location, developing a risk management plan which addresses the priorities identified in the Risk Assessment including educational programs across the organization.
Serve as the APM enterprise risk expert and leads the development of effective strategies to properly address potential risk.
Coordinates the annual review and placement of the corporate malpractice insurance policy, liability, professional liability, worker's compensation and other property and casualty product lines.
Serves as a resource to all APM leaders and staff to regarding patient safety concerns, ensuring appropriate and compliant response to patient complaints and grievances regarding APM staff and services.
Coordinate all malpractice litigation management in conjunction with the medical malpractice carrier and assigned counsel.
Establish risk management policies and procedures and implement them across the organization.
Actively promotes the use of Incident Reporting by educating all staff in the ambulatory clinical areas. Actively promotes reporting in the adverse events management system to our physician and NP/PA members in the ambulatory clinical areas.
Collaborates with the field clinical staff and managers in the review of significant adverse events to gain an understanding of the processes and conducts root cause analysis exercises.
Reviews Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations (OPPE) and Focused Professional Practice Evaluations (FPPE) of Licensed independent providers and recommends specific actions to eliminate or mitigate risk of patient harm.
Works in close collaboration with VP of Operations, Privacy Officer and Security Officer to assess and mitigate site-based organizational risks.
Provides patient safety consultation for inquiries from physicians, nurses, or other healthcare practitioners
Analyzes, summarizes, and reports on patient safety activity to the Medical Executive Committee and to the Board of Directors of the Organization.
Responsible for assessing, discovering, controlling and minimizing loss to protect the Organization.
Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in nursing, or a related field or equivalent experience is required. Juris Doctor or master’s degree in related field is preferred.
Five years minimum health care experience, plus 5 years related experience in Risk Management, or Claims Investigation is required.
Ability to relate to healthcare providers at all levels in the organization and to use clinical judgment in assessing patient care needs.
Knowledge of basic research and investigation techniques with an ability to interpret data, prepare reports, and propose solutions to difficult situations involved in a potential or actual patient injury.
Ability to promote confidentiality, respect, and dignity for all persons, as standard for the department and the organization.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational, excellent communication, critical thinking and analytical skills.
License & Certifications:
If Registered Nurse, current state registration
A valid driver’s license and proof of insurance required
