THIS POSITION IS PERMANENTLY LOCATED IN TURLOCK, CA.
Under general supervision, process, section and stain animal tissues for microscopic examination. Perform routine H&E, and special detection stains according to SOP. Prepare histological samples for shipping. Serve as safety officer for the facility and manage toxic waste disposal process.
B.S degree in a scientific discipline or equivalent work experience in histology including theory and application as it specifically pertains to diagnostic testing.
Knowledge of basic histochemistry and histology sufficient enough to understand written SOP protocols associated with the preparation of histology slides, quickly/accurately enter data into computer and work in a quality system environment adhering to all policies that ensure the highest quality of laboratory testing.
Familiarity with fixed animal tissues, including bone, eyes, skin, brain, etc and knowledge to grossly identify processed tissue types to aid in the trimming and embedding processes; and skills and experience to perform standard and special histochemical stain and immunohistochemistry procedures in a diagnostic high through-put laboratory and prepare solutions.
Skills to judge the quality of staining procedures and determine the reasons for differences between a good quality slide vs. a poor quality slide; investigate, troubleshoot, resolve and document actions related to assay failures and improvement of existing techniques.
Skills to operate lab equipment (e.g. biosafety cabinets, fume hoods, ultracentrifuge, centrifuges, ultrasonicator, auto and manual pipettes, calculators, balances, pH meter) and experience using microtome / handling delicate tissue sections.
Skills to manage/monitor cost-effective ordering, use laboratory and/or office supplies and equipment; evaluate and implement new procedures/ techniques
Knowledge and skill to handle and appropriately dispose of infectious waste, solvents / biohazardous materials and chemicals.
ASCP or equivalent certified Histotechnician.
Knowledge of and ability to follow laboratory/University safety protocols and instruct/monitor staff for the same, including appropriate disposal of waste solvents and biohazardous materials
Organizational skills to prioritize workload.
Excellent written, oral, interpersonal and customer service skills.
