The Michigan Medicine Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory is seeking a full-time Database Analyst to support next-generation sequencing (NGS) database development, optimization and maintenance as well as programming to support other testing activities within the lab.
Modify and maintain existing and create new user interfaces, analysis pipelines and databases for clinical next-generation sequencing (NGS) test data based on direction from medical director, technical director and R&D staff.
Create and maintain processes for automated assimilation of genetic sequencing quality metrics, raw and aligned sequencing files, and variant calling data and information from numerous public databases and sources into internal databases.
Create and optimize tools that facilitate the composition, storage and modification of interpretations within databases to be reported on genetic variants based on up-to-date literature and pathologist interpretation.
Data storage management including optimization of data transfer.
Troubleshoot and manage programming, database and networking issues.
Assist in the creation of software to increase the efficiency and accuracy of other laboratory functions that can be improved through programming.
Assist in the preparation of procedures and other documentation relating to user interfaces, databases and analysis pipelines.
Requirements: •Baccalaureate degree in computer science/bioinformatics •Experience with programming and relational databases •Basic knowledge of molecular biology and genomics •Working knowledge of laboratory information systems •Minimum of 1 - 3 years experience in computer science/bioinformatics
For Senior level candidate must have:
•Baccalaureate degree in computer science /bioinformatics, or Masters in computer science/bioinformatics •Experience with programming and relational databases •Knowledge of molecular biology and genomics •Working knowledge of laboratory information systems •Minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience in computer science/bioinformatics
Desired Qualifications •Experience with Access, Visual Basic, Perl, R, Python, SQL, Bash, Linux/Unix •Experience analyzing next-generation sequencing data and knowledge of NGS file formats (e.g. FASTQ, BAM, VCF, BED) •Experience with and knowledge of databases and bioinformatics tools commonly used in NGS including IGV, GATK, SAMtools, BEDtools, Cosmic, PubMed etc.
