This position is located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA Maine Healthcare System in Augusta, ME. The Medical Technician will serve as a phlebotomist in the collection, processing, and distribution of the required blood specimens from both hospitalized bed patients, ambulatory patients, and out-patients. Duties include, but are not limited to: Performing venipunctures associated with tolerance tests, time tests, "stat" tests, and routine requests throughout the Hospital. Utilizing patient identification methods. Providing customer service for those utilizing the laboratory services. Processing and accessioning in laboratory orders through VISTA. Answering telephones and referring unanswered questions to the appropriate source for correct information/assistance. Processing blood, urine, and other body fluid specimens as necessary for testing. Performing centrifugation, aliquoting, and determination of acceptable specimens. Performing other related duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
