| The incumbent at this level has full supervisory responsibility for a staff of nonsupervisory personnel. Recommends appointment, plans and assigns work, gives advice and counsel and evaluates work of subordinates. Is responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of performance. Assures orientation, training and competency assessment of assigned staff. Develops and updates technical policy and procedure manuals. Performs the full range of supervisory duties for the anatomic pathology laboratory (e.g., autopsy and morgue, histology lab, cytopathology lab, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and molecular diagnostics) as well as administrative procedures associated with transcription, filing and storage, inventory and supplies, coordinating and recording results of anatomic pathology conferences, monitoring case completion times and coordinating outside consultation cases. - Plans and schedules on-going work. Adjusts staffing levels or work procedures. - Chooses methods for achieving work goals, objectives, and management strategies. - Day-to-day supervision of highly complex test performance. - Is responsible for monitoring histopathology methodologies and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of performance. - Assures corrective action is initiated when test performance deviates from established performance specifications. - Assures orientation, training, and competency assessment of staff. - Implements and monitors quality management activities within anatomic pathology. - Recommends appointment, plans and assigns work, gives advice and counsel, and evaluates work of subordinates. - Develops and recommends policy and procedures for the procurement and service requirements for histopathology/cytopathology equipment and instrumentation. Ensure the appropriate correlation among different instrumentation and methodologies - Serves as a recognized technical expert (technical consultant or technical supervisor as mandated by CLIA) to provide authoritative advice and consultation in areas of anatomical pathology quality control/assurance, records control, proficiency testing, inspection, and accreditation to all levels of the organization. - Evaluates histopathology/cytopathology/molecular pathology activities to assesses ongoing day-to-day compliance with established protocols and guidelines. Recommends policy/protocol changes to correct deficiencies and improve the program. - Creates, applies, and monitors reengineering and continuous performance improvement initiatives, both within the program and/or the organization. - Identifies, defines, and resolves issues associated with complex aspects of the data and ensures the validity of data in relation to the test systems. - Consults with pathologists or equivalent of clinical services to identify histopathology/cytology/molecular pathology needs and to analyze emerging trends and technology and adopts appropriate methods. - Identifies, defines, and resolves problems associated with unique or controversial aspects of the anatomic pathology management program where no direct precedent exists. - Develops technical bulletins, procedures, training materials and other program materials, which ensure accreditation and compliance with all regulatory agencies concerning patient testing, result reporting, and proficiency testing.
