Ophthalmology Technicians in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) perform functions such as technical clinical care to patients who have received care provided by Ophthalmologists for diagnosis, treatment, prevention, follow-up care and patient counseling. The Full Performance Health Technician (Ophthalmology) performs a range of standard, but complex, diagnostic procedures, assists during clinic-based surgical procedures, educates patients and legal representatives. The Health Technician (Ophthalmology) provides technical assistance to providers in the Eye Clinic in examining and treating optometry and ophthalmology patients. The incumbent performs a range of standard, but complex, diagnostic procedures with responsibility for checking calibration of the instruments prior to procedure. The Health Technician (Ophthalmology) also performs a variety of clinic support and administrative duties to support smooth patient flow, patient triage, access to care, patient safety, infection control, quality improvement, and compliance with all policies and procedures. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Obtains patent physical history to include chief complaint, reason for visit, pertinent signs/symptoms, past history, review of medications. Participates in performance of quality assurance activities such as staff meetings, mandatory educational in-services, quality control reports, systems redesign, and team and morale improvement. Obtains an accurate medical and ophthalmic history. Measures and records visual acuity. Administers anesthetic eye drops. Performing basic tonometry. Estimates the anterior chamber depth. Records a simple spectacle reading through automated lensometry. Triages patient phone calls or requests. Ensures exam rooms are stocked with adequate supplies. Instructs patients on administration of eye drops and post-operative instructions. Accurately measures, compares, and evaluates pupillary responses. Administers eye drops to dilate pupils. Performs basic color vision screening. Performs basic imaging testing such as corneal topography; external photography. Below are the Palo Alto salary breakdown of each grade level: GS-05 Salary Range: $ 43,018.00 to $ 55,925.00 per annual GS-06 Salary Range: $ 47,952.00 to $ 62,337.00 per annual GS-07 Salary Range: $ 53,286.00 to $ 69,274.00 per annual GS-08 Salary Range: $ 59,013.00 to $ 76,720.00 per annual Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm.
