These positions are located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Augusta, Maine. The Medical Technician serve as phlebotomist in the collection, processing, and distribution of required blood specimens from hospitalized bed patients, ambulatory patients, and outpatients. ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Additional duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Assists in the testing and Quality Control (QC) review program of inpatient glucose meters and assists in the retrieval of data and performs QC checks on glucometers; Schedules and performs venipunctures associated with tolerance tests, time tests, "stat" tests, and routine requests throughout the hospital; Recognizes possible adverse reactions, such as fainting, nausea, etc., that can occur in conjunction with venipunctures and administers basic immediate care; Processes and accessions laboratory orders through a computerized system; Processes blood, urine, and other body fluid specimens as necessary for testing; Performs centrifugation, aliquoting, and determination of acceptable specimens; Performs positive patient identification and labeling of specimens; Performs all other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday; 8:00 am - 4:30 pm or 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. Shifts include holidays and weekends on a rotation basis (rotate every 7th weekend). Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
