The Supervisory MST functions as a first-level supervisor responsible for the oversight of a group of MSTs, with administrative responsibility for planning and directing the work. Relocation/Recruitment Incentives may be authorized for highly qualified candidates. Processes and sterilizes a wide variety of instrumentation, to include implant devices, in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, and ensures that they are held for the required time post sterilization per regulations. Consists of publications on sterile supply operations, listing of the contents of trays and sets, operating room and clinic schedules, manufacturer's catalogs and fact sheets, assembly and troubleshooting manuals, equipment operating instructions, shelf-life guidelines and oral instructions on the various medical personnel preferences concerning supplies. Since guidelines are not totally specific, the employee has some leeway in determining the tray and package setups based on specials requests and recommending substitutes due to unavailability or cost concerns. Guidelines permit no deviation from certain set procedures such as operation of sterilizers, content of sets (except when prescribed items are unavailable), and use of standard tests. Judgement is required in such activities as selecting pre-sterilization cleaning methods and sterilization mediums, placement of instruments in tray, and the substitution of items for missing supplies, instruments and equipment. Judgement based on past experience is required in resolving malfunctions in equipment. Prudence and experienced judgement are required in emergency situations where the employee must decide to use less desirable or more costly processing to make available urgently needed supplies, instruments and equipment. Must be capable of concentrating on several activities at one time, being alert to the various sounds and actions in each work area, e.g., sounds from the ultrasonic washer, decontamination washers and sterilizers while washing or preparing items for processing, always watchful of possible malfunctions. Checks for damaged or missing items and arranges for replacement, maintenance, or repair as needed. Independently prepares the full range of trays and sets necessary to be used in wards, clinic areas, dental clinic and OR. Assigns work with standing instructions on objectives, priorities, and deadlines, and provides guidance for unusually involved situations. Evaluates completed work for overall technical soundness and conformance to agency policies through competency assessment utilizing simulation, direct observation and verbal responses from the incumbent. Works as team member with other Medical Supply Technicians of various experience to carry out the daily work utilizing the written standard operating procedures and/or manufactures written instructions in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted/standard practices.
