***A RECRUITMENT OR RELOCATION INCENTIVE MAY BE AUTHORIZED FOR A HIGHLY QUALIFIED APPLICANT*** The incumbent serves as a generalist in medical technology with responsibility for performing procedures in the areas of Blood Bank, Chemistry and Special Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Phlebotomy, Urinalysis, Immunohematology, and Microbiology. He/She also works off-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays as priorities demonstrate a need. The duties and responsibilities of the Medical Technologist includes serving in the clinical laboratory with responsibility for performing a variety of procedures, including complex analyses and infrequently requested non-standard tests; evaluating abnormal results; using and maintaining equipment and setting up and monitoring quality controls. The duties of a Generalist include, but is not limited to the following: 1. Selects the appropriate equipment and procedures for the requested analyses. 2. Processes specimens using equipment, instruments, or techniques that are necessary to prepare them for specific analysis; controls external and internal physical conditions; responds to time factors to insure that the physiologic state of the specimen is maintained. 3. Prepares reagents, assembles equipment, verifies corrupt instrument operation; standardizes, performs and calculates results for a variety of complex tests such as bone marrow studies and associated special stains and procedures, buffy coat examinations, serum and cell enzyme assays, special tests for hemolytic anemia's, special coagulation tests, and body fluid differentials and smears, complex chemical assays and microbiological identification. 4. Identifies unusual results or discrepancies/conditions which cause erroneous results (instrument malfunctions, conditions or test performance, reactions systems, and/or tests procedures used). Takes appropriate action to make corrections and solve problems. Conducts literature searches, if indicated. Confers with and assists Biomed for repair and corrective action in case of equipment failure. 5. Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and assay procedures. Correlates quantitative, biochemical, physiologic and morphologic data with other laboratory data (e.g., blood smear estimates with leukocyte and platelet counts, RBC appearance with indicators, CKMB with other enzyme analyses) and/or other patient data (history, physical findings, medications) to verify results. Performs additional test to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results and reports results of verification procedure. 6. Accepts referrals of abnormal or unusual results and observations from lower grade personnel. Advises on course of action to follow when values obtained from standard of control sample values are unacceptable. Examines functions of instruments, rechecks conditions of test performance, evaluates reaction systems and/or procedural techniques utilized, and identifies function with symptom. 7. Sets up and develops protocol for new instruments and procedures from well established references. Tests and develops quality control methods, calculating the mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation, and determining statistical significance when indicated. 8. Assists in developing, maintaining, and modifying various computer applications. Maintains liaison with technical representatives to correct computer programming and resolve common problems. Participates in the planning and conduct of courses (including classroom lectures and bench instruction) for the basic clinical subjects in the hospital's school of medical laboratory technician program. Supplements prescribed course contents and instruction materials as necessary. Prepares contents and instruction materials as necessary. Prepares and gives in-service lectures and demonstrations to newer and less experienced employees and to employees of other services. The incumbent provides patient care that is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional and chronicle maturation needs of the adult and/or geriatric patient. Incumbent adheres to fire, safety, and security requirements. In the performance of Official duties the employee has access to printed and electronic files containing sensitive data which must be protected under the provisions of the privacy act of 1974 and other appropriate laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policy and VHA policy. The employee is responsible for (1) protecting those data from unauthorized deletion; and (2) following applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files and user ADP security as set out in the computer access statement which the employee signs.
