This Health Technician position is located in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service at the Tomah, Wisconsin VA Medical Center and provides clinical and administrative clerical support for the service and assists in the daily care to patients (inpatients and outpatients) who are receiving treatment for the physical medicine needs. Specific duties include but are not limited to: -Takes and records vital signs prior to examination. These signs include temperature, pulse, blood pressure, height, weight and collection of specimens. -Assists with joint injections and miscellaneous patient pre/clinical assistance. -Prepares patients, equipment, and assists in the administration of the following clinical activities: Muscle testing, Electromyography, Nerve conduction studies, evoked potential, Ambulation assessments, Orthotic evaluations, Transcutaneous nerve stimulation, and orthotics fabrication. -Assists physical and occupational therapy staff with lymphedema and other specific treatment. -Provides assistance to orthotics clinic, polytrauma clinic, and amputee clinic. -Serves as backup to Audiology Health Technician for leave purposes. -Assists in the removal and reapplication of wound dressings and medication. -Assists in the assessment of fit and application of splints, prostheses, Orthoses, etc. -Provides basic fitness gym coverage for well patients. -Obtains and monitors the use of publications, stationary supplies, or maintenance services of office equipment such as copiers. -Monitors supplies for clinical area and maintains clean, disinfected, and sterilized instrumentation, equipment, and work surfaces for the treatment room. -Serves as resource for staff in clinical and Medical Center infection control and patient safety practices. -Provides patient education materials for medical problems, procedures, and medications. -Completes documentation entries into the medical record system. -Maintains treatment records, patient scheduling, and staff calendars. -Performs a variety of clerical/administrative support, receptionist, record keeping, and miscellaneous duties. -Schedules appointments and procedures utilizing automated patient record system. -Uses software to produce specific printouts for the clinical staff such as encounter forms and treatment plans. -Checks records for specific eligibility determinations. -Schedules appointments and tests, coordinates activities and appointments for the clinical areas avoiding conflicts in patient treatments. -Answers telephone inquiries regarding scheduling questions from patients. -Requests patient's previous medical records Medical Center files and/or requests patient's records from other sources. -Handles established requirements for training clerical employees and giving orientation to volunteers, new employees, and guests. -Receives and directs callers and visitors. -Provides general or basic information regarding office hours, visiting hours and whether staff is on duty. -Serves as Timekeeper. -Coordinates meeting schedules and maintains clinic profiles of rehabilitation staff. -Performs other related duties as assigned.
