The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) is responsible for skilled continuous comprehensive monitoring, interpretation, evaluation and documentation of the patient cardiac monitoring system for acute inpatients with orders for telemetry monitoring. Telemetry monitoring requires constant attention and focus to monitor cardiac rhythms, ST segment monitoring, pacemaker function and monitoring, measuring PQRST complexes, and other related duties. The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) is responsible for skilled continuous comprehensive monitoring, interpretation, evaluation and documentation of the patient cardiac monitoring system for acute inpatients with orders for telemetry monitoring. Telemetry monitoring requires constant attention and focus to monitor cardiac rhythms, ST segment monitoring, pacemaker function and monitoring, measuring PQRST complexes, and other related duties. The MIT monitors tracings from electronic monitoring equipment to identify all cardiac rhythms including lethal rhythm disturbances such as ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, atrial fibrillation and other complex dysrhythmias on monitored patients. The MIT will provide 24/7 continuous monitoring of all patients requiring telemetry. They will be reliable, timely, and accurate when reporting significant cardiac events and/or monitoring inconsistencies. The MIT relays all critical information to the RN, the medical provider, and/or the emergency response team according to policy. The MIT communicates effectively and courteously both orally and in writing with staff, patients, and patient family members. The MIT answers the telephone promptly and communicates information to appropriate staff in accordance with clinical needs The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) is responsible for the following duties: Functions in the use of the monitoring equipment with supervision and works in collaboration with the primary RN, charge nurse or medical provider. Information is relayed quickly as appropriate via established communication system, and verbally for notification of emergent alarms and potentially emergent situations. The MIT will report rhythm changes and arrhythmias to the assigned RN caring of the patient and/or the charge nurse, following the established policy for communication during cardiac monitoring. The MIT will review previous shift's rhythm strips for shift history and reviews patient information in the electronic medical record upon admission to review telemetry orders and parameters to prevent any delay in placing a patient on ordered telemetry and to ensure accuracy of ordered parameters for monitoring. Verifies appropriate parameters of heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, or arrhythmias based on the clinical alarm policy and from the provider's orders and notifies the assigned RN of patient changes that are outside of the set parameters. Accurately interpret and identify cardiac rhythms and electrocardiographic changes in rhythm. Collects rhythm strips and documents ventricular rate, PR interval, and QRS duration as ordered or required, and with any changes, giving a summary of the cardiac rhythm throughout their shift. The MIT gives verbal report to providers, shift Charge Nurse, and other Telemetry Technicians. Admits and discharges patients to the Telemetry Report/Log. The MIT sets alarms in accordance with physician orders, clinical alarm policy, and consultations with qualified RN in specific circumstances per Clinical alarm policy. Works with unit RN for all cardiac monitoring strip interpretations prior to placement in the patient's medical record. If a patient is discharged, transferred, or moved to another unit or has scheduled appointments, the MIT will document in the monitoring system where the patient is going/and or moved to. When the patient is brought back on the unit, Nursing staff must communicate and return to telemetry status for MIT to resume monitoring Maintains a quality assurance review of all Telemetry and EKG equipment. Contacts Biomedical Engineering to ensure periodic maintenance. Reviews new technical developments in the field of Telemetry and recommends improvements to Nursing management. The incumbent performs rhythm evaluation and interpretation and must have an understanding of cardiovascular anatomy, Medical Terminology, EKG rhythm analysis, and variation of normal. Knowledge of EKG analysis is required to recognize and properly respond to urgent or emergent situations Basic understanding of the microprocessor operation of the Telemetry monitoring machines including the operation and selection of various power ranges and settings to get the proper data. Understanding the Telemetry principles and the mechanics of generating an EKG signal. Knowledge of data processing function of the software and the ability to demonstrate if the Telemetry unit is functioning properly or not and to determine if it is a major or minor breakdown. Employee must have an understanding of the keyboard input, purpose of the various pre-set program settings and where and when to select them. Ability to process and post process the data and to set up the equipment for operation to provide manual override procedures when external conditions produce imperfect data. Work Schedule: Night Shift 1830-0700 (6) 12 hour shifts plus 2230-0700 (1) 8 hour shift in a 2 week pay period with rotating weekends.
