These positions are located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service, Pre-analytic Services (PAS) at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bay Pines, Florida. The Medical Technician performs duties that include reference laboratory specimen processing, clerical functions, patient testing, as well as phlebotomy. These positions will support the Federal Government's response efforts to COVID-19. ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Prepares requests for testing and specimens into the clinical laboratory and verifies the accuracy and completeness of requests; Follows procedures for processing biological specimens; Utilizes various types of laboratory equipment such as centrifuge and barcode reader; Verifies proper patient preparation, specimen collection, and specimen transport requirements; Serves as the reference and processor for complex specialized Hematology/Oncology samples; Maintains a record of all specimens submitted to the reference laboratories by printing accessioning forms and shipping manifests; Performs patient testing such as urine pregnancy testing, glucose, FIT testing and sed rates; Responsible for Microbiology set-ups to include plating and accessing of microbiology samples; Performs established quality control procedures to check the accuracy and validity of test results; Performs employee drug screens; Draws blood from outpatients using special drawing techniques, assuring that proper tubes are used and correct amount of blood is drawn; Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Multiple Schedules: Midnight to 8 am; 6 am to 2:30 pm; 7am to 3:30 pm; 7:30 am to 4 pm; and 2:30pm to 11 pm. All schedules have rotating weekend and holiday rotation. In addition, employee will have rotation on On-Call Schedule and Emergency Operation Plan for essential personnel as needed. NOTE: These are TERM appointments (not-to-exceed 1 year, 1 day). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration. Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition.
