The John J Pershing VA Medical Center is seeking a medical technologist for duty at Poplar Bluff, MO A Medical Technologist develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results. Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens using manual and/or automated techniques. Duties include but are not limited to: Prepares reports, maintains records and administrative information. Prepares and presents work-related information to Laboratory Supervisor. Ensures compliance with all accrediting agency regulations. Evaluates the suitability of specimens for analysis, requesting and/or collecting new specimen if determined to be unusable. Prepares and collects specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiologic state of the specimen properties is maintained. Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols. Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction; locates and implements corrections. Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports. Reports discrepancies/outliers to Departmental Lead Technologist and/or Laboratory Supervisor. Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts and maintains instruments. Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks and monitoring. Identifies the cause of common problems and makes simple repairs. Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures. Correlates quantitative data with patient data (i.e., history, medications) to verify results. Performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results. Recognizes abnormal results that require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly, with appropriate documentation. Responsible for generation of laboratory results from the work area into the LIS and for editing and verification of results recorded in patient's electronic record. Adheres to practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace. Incorporates principles of educational methodology in the instruction and training of new employees and/or students in the laboratory's inservice/continuing education program.
