The Department of Medicine is a premier academic department with a rich history of providing excellent patient care, education, and research. An integral component of the clinical enterprise, the Department represents 39% of BUSM’s research portfolio of NIH funding. It has over 700 faculty assigned to 10 traditional divisions and 4 interdisciplinary research centers. The Department has a diverse research portfolio currently supported by more than $110 million of annual funding and is ranked among the top tier of all Departments of Medicine in US schools of medicine. After providing excellent leadership for the past 15 years, Dr. David Coleman will be stepping down and a national search is underway.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished visionary leader in internal medicine, an exemplary physician, investigator, and teacher, with a track record of success in program development, mentoring, and innovation. The successful candidate will have a leadership style that is focused on the success of the faculty in all of their endeavors; a commitment to institutional, as well as departmental leadership; deep understanding of the role of culture in organizational success; and a willingness to be both strategic and tactical in achieving objectives. The candidate must be committed to identifying and promoting opportunities for faculty and trainees to collaborate across the School of Medicine in all three primary missions.
The successful candidate will have an excellent operational and financial track record. They must be operationally savvy with the versatility to both participate in strategic development and to manage operations. The Chair will be seen as a champion for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in all areas of the institution.
The ideal candidate is expected to be a highly respected academic investigator with an established track record of NIH funding as well as an active practitioner, with dynamic leadership skills and administrative expertise and to recruit outstanding NIH funded research and clinical faculty and to lead in a manner that supports and contributes to the success and unity of the enterprise, the school, and the campus community.
Qualified candidates must hold a medical degree (MD or MD/PhD) or equivalent; be board certified in their specialty; are eligible for licensure in the state of Massachusetts and qualify for a faculty appointment at the Professor level in the Boston University School of Medicine.
