The System Manager will oversee Blood Bank operations for our hospital system. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fully integrated laboratory system partnering closely with the Medical Directors of Transfusion Services to provide high-quality, full-spectrum Blood Bank services to 8 hospitals, 1 health plex providing inpatient and outpatient services, and 2 full-service Cancer Centers. Teamwork and service is in our culture, and this position will lead coordination of systems in inventory management, technical expertise, quality management, and program growth with a group of highly talented Blood Bank personnel across our system. Geisinger Laboratory Blood Bank transfuses 20,000 red blood cell units per year and accomplishes 345,000 billable procedures annually. Our Blood Bank system operation closely aligns with an active Patient Blood Management Program that is a part of the laboratory.
Plans and oversees system-wide operations for the Blood Bank, including: communications to employees, relevant customers and suppliers, workload analysis, workflow, facilities, equipment, supplies, security, safety and health, interdepartmental relations, referred tests.
Guides technical duties and provides technical knowledge and support to staff and clients throughout the Medical Laboratories sites.
In collaboration with the Doctoral Director and Analytical Specialists ensures that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems and Quality Assurance deviate from established performance specifications.
Successfully implements changes to operations as needed.
Demonstrates receptiveness to new ideas and guides and supports others through change.
Coordinates all aspects of planning for capital needs for the department specific discipline with the Medical Directors, Analytical Specialist and within the oversight of the Operations Directors and Managers for each site.
Leads communication with employees through constructive techniques, renders appropriate recognition and acknowledgement of achievement, services as a role model to the rest of section team for effective communication.
Maintains a staff of qualified personnel to assure quality testing and service.
Selects, instructs and develops employees through careful interviewing, comprehensive training, delegation, and supportive coaching.
Ensures competency of analytical specialist and technical experts.
Provides educational direction and promotes opportunities for all levels of staff.
Actively seeks input from Medical Director, Analytical Specialists and staff.
Motivates subordinates to seek and participate in development opportunities.
Organizes and submits annual performance appraisals.
Prepares and monitors annual operating budget for section's cost centers, forecasts workload for revenue projection, meets fiscal requirements.
Supervises analysis of cost for materials and negotiation of contracts to obtain favorable prices.
Oversees purchasing, receiving and inventory management to reduce costs.
Actively supports the Quality Program and takes a leadership role in facilitating change to realize noticeable error reduction and service improvement.
Leads communication with lab peers and customer department colleagues to assure execution of operational excellence.
Assures compliance with applicable regulations and accrediting standards.
Participates in and act as an Operations Advisor for the Best Practice Committees.

The successful candidate will have at least 6 years of experience managing a blood bank.
AABB Blood Bank specialty certification strongly desired.
Typical work hours are 8a-4:30p but may vary as needed.
Local travel to other Geisinger facilities is required.
