JOB SUMMARY Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Baylor University Medical Center - Dallas is looking to hire TWO cancer genetic counselors to join our growing genetics team, located in the heart of a beautiful cancer center. Genetic counselors at Baylor University Medical Center provide genetic education, counseling, and support to individuals and families who may be at risk to have a hereditary cancer syndrome. This position offers a supportive genetic counselor supervisor, medical director, and administrative staff, as well as a continuing education stipend.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE -Provides cancer genetic counseling services in-person and by telehealth.
-Analyzes and interprets patient and family medical data obtained from patient, medical records, and laboratory results and communicates findings to patients and physicians.
-Maintains appropriate records and writes detailed clinic notes and patient summary letters to provide information on complex genetic concepts to patients and referring physicians.
-Discusses genetic testing options and the associated risks, benefits, and limitations with patients to assist them in making informed decisions.
-Helps patients and family members comprehend the diagnosis, probable cause of the disorder, and available management strategies.
-Educates patients and families on alternatives for dealing with the risk of genetic disorders, choosing a course of action, and recurrence risks.
-Serves as an advocate and provides counseling and support resources to families.
-Able to serve as a clinical rotation supervisor for genetic counseling graduate students.
-Participates in multidisciplinary tumor conferences.
-Provides educational presentations to physicians and participates in community outreach.
