The incumbent serves as a Medical Technician in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service performing a variety often complex laboratory tests in any of the following laboratory sections; Hematology, Urinalysis, Chemistry, Coagulation, Serology, and Microbiology. The incumbent collects blood specimens from patient by venipuncture. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Operate the main and back-up Hematology analyzers to produce test results such as white and red blood cell counts, hemoglobin and hematocrit determinations, automated cell differential and platelet counts. Perform quality control testing, prepare peripheral blood smears and perform stains. Recognize urinalysis result which indicate further testing required. Prepare urine specimens for microscope analysis. Operate a variety of complex automated analyzers to produce test results such as glucose, urea nitrogen, electrolytes, lipid tests, liver function tests, kidney function tests. Set up complex manual tests such as pregnancy testing, Flu testing, MRSA and C.diff testing including quality control testing. Perform bacteriological cultures by selecting the appropriate culture media to support growth, inoculates patient specimens to media, chooses the proper incubation conditions for culture, prepares gram stains, operates the automated blood culture instrument and performs occult blood testing. Perform venipuncture on inpatients and outpatients using standard phlebotomy techniques. Conducts periodic inventory of phlebotomy supplies within the laboratory and in patient care settings and replenishes supplies as needed.
