The Patient Care Technician II under general direction of Nursing staff, performs duties requiring knowledge of basic patient care principles and knowledge of medical terminology. The PCT II performs direct technical care, assists with personal hygiene, and dietary needs. The PCT II may handle medications in accordance with responsibilities. Duties may vary by assigned area or shift.
Below are the essential functions for the role.
Provide direct technical care to patients and perform variety of semi-complex treatments including inserting and managing urinary catheters, caring for tracheotomy tubes, incisions, sterile dressings, decubitus care, draining wounds, nasal and gastric feeding, and suture care.
Perform complex procedures such as assisting with patient education, splinting, stocking crash cart, phlebotomy, preparing equipment, administering oxygen, and educating patients on use of incentive spirometry and monitoring compliance performance.
Take and document patient vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure, obtain patient specimens.
Assist patients with personal hygiene activities and dietary needs.
Perform exercise and gait as directed by Physical Therapist and/or Registered Nurse.
Communicate patient status information to facilitate assessment and evaluation of patient to Nursing Staff and/or appropriate healthcare provider.
Orient patient and family to Hospital, Unit, or Department on admission as needed.
Exhibit knowledge and skills in order to perform duties of Patient Service Assistant as required by needs of department staffing.
Perform related technical and service duties which include running errands, picking up supplies, delivering specimens, receiving, sorting, and recording results, transporting patients, assisting in turning and lifting patients, and other duties as needed.
Follow Baylor Scott & White Health established safety procedures to protect self and patients.
Attend required educational programs/in-services, staff conferences, meet required competencies and assist in training of other personnel.
Document according to BSWH policies and procedures.
