Provides genetic counseling and risk assessment services for patients and families. Interviews patients and families to collect personal, medical and family history information. Analyzes and interprets information obtained from interviews, medical records, lab results, etc. in order to properly assess the risks and inheritance patterns of the genetic disorder. Provides genetic counseling services and explains aspects of the genetic disorder, current state of knowledge and inheritance patterns. Explains potential diagnostic techniques and discusses medical procedures and/or options available to patients and families. Coordinates and implements genetic testing protocols, and arranges testing with reference laboratories. Participates in team treatment conferences which may consist of the family, physician, social worker, etc., to assist family in planning a course of action. Involved in educational, research, community outreach and continuing education activities. Develops and implements educational sessions, materials and curriculum for medical personnel, students, residents and the general public. May provide functional guidance to students, residents and fellows.
1. Masterâ��s degree in Medical/Human Genetics or Genetic Counseling, or a related field.
2. Board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
3. Two years experience in genetic counseling strongly preferred.
1. Analytical ability to prepare reports and to interpret genetic test results and perform risk assessments.
2. Effective written and verbal communication skills.
3. Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, families, physicians and office personnel.
