The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) independently performs a variety of both General Diagnostic X-ray and Mammography exams. The Diagnostic X-ray portion includes all types of routine and specialized exams within the department, in the Operating Room, the Emergency Department, or portable exams on the Nursing Units in Mammography. The DRT must be able to employ specialized mammographic image techniques such as magnification views and implant views of the breast. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, candidates must meet the following grade requirements. GS-9 Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. 2. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. 3. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. 4. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. 5. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. 6. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. Assignment. Assignment. Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. Certification: DRT (Mammography) assignment include performance of independent duties in this subspecialty require an advanced ARRT (M) certification. References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G25 - Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist Qualification Standards. Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of standing and walking. There's some bending, lifting, and carrying of light items such as DR plates. There's occasional moderate exertion such as lifting assisting other technicians in lifting and positioning patients. Heavy lifting of totally incapacitated patients is done only with the help of SPH approved devices. The Diagnostic X-ray portion of the position includes all types of routine and specialized exams within the department, in the Operating Room, the Emergency Department, or portable exams on the Nursing Units in Mammography, this includes both initial screening mammograms to very difficult diagnostic and magnification views. Continuously monitors and documents the performance of the imaging equipment dedicated to mammography to fulfill the requirements for the FDA, MQSA, and VHA. Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Independently operates mammography equipment to obtain examinations of high quality. Independently performs screening, diagnostic, appropriate supplemental procedures, breast localization and biopsy exams. Independently makes routine radiographic examinations of head, trunk and extremities for diagnosis of illness or injuries. Works under the guidance of the lead to perform Mammography quality control to record, track and maintain data in an appropriate fashion. Works closely with the lead technologist to perform quality control to record, track and maintain appropriate data. Provides corrective actions and troubleshooting, and notifies the biomedical engineer as needed. Under the guidance of the lead, the technologist performs and maintains an annual checklist of quality control areas and at the frequencies noted in 21 CFR 900.12( e ): Breast phantoms testing and evaluation; Equipment assessment (control panel, equipment locks, light field testing, cables, KV, mas indicators); Equipment Compression force tests; Softcopy Workstation evaluation/testing; Detector calibration; Detector artifact evaluation; Digital phantom assessments ( optical density assessments); Signal to noise and Contrast measurements; Compression thickness indicator evaluation; Equipment repairs and preventative maintenance; Discharge any and all technologist QC testing specified by manufacturer.
