Entry-level position with the Affiliate Affairs department and APHA’s Alliance for Disease Prevention and Response. Coordinating logistics for Affiliate activities, working to help facilitate and monitor policy and advocacy efforts around public health in the states, planning and managing National Public Health Week (NPHW) tools and events and building a strong network of state and local public health associations across the country. This is a grant-funded position guaranteed through August 31, 2024, with possibility to continue contingent on grant funding.
Affiliate Affairs: Support APHA’s Affiliate member organizations and their leaders through scheduling and helping to plan annual training provided to new Affiliate leaders in Washington, D.C., as well as APHA and Affiliate events throughout the year, including APHA’s Annual Meeting. Utilize APHA LEAD to share updates and reminders with Affiliate leaders and members about APHA requirements, deadlines, grant and report deliverables and opportunities.Participate in the planning and implementation of APHA, Affiliate Affairs and Alliance for Disease Prevention and Response programs, meetings and services. Activities may include but are not limited to: supporting Affiliate, department and APHA efforts, participating in the development of communication tools, coordinating Affiliate education and training schedules, calendar and administrative tasks. Advocacy: Support grant-funded efforts to build Affiliate capacity around public health policy and advocacy within their states. Provide technical assistance to cohort of Affiliates to engage new partners and strengthen outreach efforts. Facilitate connections between Affiliates, APHA and Alliance staff and other state and local partners focused on work to protect public health authority and advance efforts around advocacy in the states.Assist in providing technical assistance to Affiliates around advocacy and policy to advance public health, protect its ability to act, and to assist in engaging new partners and promoting equity, such as social media, fact sheets and/or webinar presentations. Help maintain Public Health & Equity Resource Navigator and network map. National Public Health Week: Work with director and manager of Affiliate Affairs and other APHA staff to coordinate and organize the National Public Health Week initiative. For NPHW, serve as main point person for the Keep It Moving Challenge, serving as customer service point person for participants, planning participant engagement events and leading communications and promotion efforts. Lead efforts onboarding new NPHW national, state, local and school partners. Manage NPHW.org website and assist with Alliance for Disease Prevention and Response website. Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree (public health, communications, policy or related fields preferred). One year’s project/grant management experience, preferably in a non-profit setting (preferred but not required). Proven exemplary customer service, membership/volunteer engagement skills. Proven experience building relationships and fostering communication and agreement between community partners and members. Demonstrated organizational and logistical skills. Ability to work creatively with partner organizations, volunteer leaders and staff. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines. Proficiency in personal computers and related software applications. Some domestic travel required.
Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations. Hybrid work environment.
Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Monday - Friday (daytime). Number of openings: 1.
